MARTY (voiceover): In the not so distance past, me and some mates pieced together my ultimate street car A generation four Subaru Liberty with a turbocharged EZ36 six-cylinder engine, STI six speed manual transmission, custom wheels and paint, running E85 and making around 260Kw at the wheels. It’s the fastest car I’ve ever owned and also the most versatile. It’s taken on many of our other MCM project cars. It went up against ModMax on the dirt, Miss Daisy at the drags, and has smashed the odd Honda as well. More recently we teamed up with Turbo Yoda and Mechanical Stig to test our skills and build something even more wild. This is the Double Unicorn. A V8 All-Wheel-Drive manual turbocharged monster. Also running E85. Also a wagon and also a daily-driven street car. Ever since both cars were completed, the question has been asked, over and over again: ‘Which one is faster down the strip?’ Well, today we find out. (CROWD NOISES) It’s MCM Nationals and there are thousands of fans at Sydney Dragway who have come from all over the country. The Stagea does make more power but it’s also heavier and has longer gearing. Supergramps has short gearing meaning we can get off the line quick but the question is: can it build up enough speed to chop the Double Unicorn? Here we go people. PA ANNOUNCER (Moog?): Make some noise for the wagons everybody!
BENNY (muffled): We didn’t even know who won until we came back up. MARTY: I think I got him out of the hole but then I just see this Stagea just creeping up next to me and by the line I think he just got me but that was really close and really fun. MOOG: So you going to launch more aggressively? Or do you got a bit of a game plan to make sure you could do like a double-tap? BENNY: I’m gonna try and launch as hard as I can but I don’t want to break the car either. So I’ve got to drive it 150Km home. MOOG: Hnh. Oh so you, literally driving home in this today? BENNY: Yes. MARTY (voiceover): That’s right. The extra cred you get from driving to-and-from the drag-strip just sweetens the win. We’re going best of three races. Supergramps will need a perfect run to avoid getting reeled-in at the end of the strip. We’re staged up and ready to race. MOOG (PA Announcer): Yaaayyy! Yes! MARTY: Ah, that was all concentration that run. There was no way I was gonna be talking. My launch was pretty good. I definitely did have wheel spin still. But I think I might have got that one. This is really good racing! These cars are quite evenly matched. MARTY (offscreen): How’d you go?
BENNY: Ah, just bogged the launch bad.
MARTY: No Good?
BENNY: Nah. MARTY: Ah, I love this car. I just love it. It just does everything. I crap-on all the time, about
BENNY: Huh? ****, called it. MARTY (voiceover): The Stagea has dropped some coolant, it isn’t much but for safety reasons it’s now out of the race. MOOG (on microphone): A Supergramps win and now a broken Unicorn. Well done boys. I know what you guys will be doing for the next few hours. MARTY (on microphone): In fact I always say this: whenever we go to the drags and something doesn’t go right I’m always like wait this is kinda a good thing because it means we’re going to go fix it, make it faster… MARTY (voiceover): And make it faster we will. The Double Unicorn and Supergramps will meet again someday on MCM.
